Individuals, companies: who owns a .fr?

Every .fr holder is classified by AFNIC in one of two categories: PERSON (individual) or ORG (legal entity: company, association, public body, foundation, etc.). This typology reflects the holder's legal nature at the time of registration.

Historically, .fr has been open to companies and organisations since its creation in 1986, but only became accessible to European individuals in 2006. This is why companies still dominate the stock today, even though the share of individuals is steadily growing.

To register a .fr as an individual, you must reside in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. Companies can be based anywhere in the world as long as they comply with AFNIC's naming charter. This controlled openness policy ensures stock stability and limits the massive cybersquatting that affects some gTLDs.

Frequently asked questions

Can an individual register a .fr?

Yes, since 2006 any individual residing in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein can register a .fr domain name without business documentation.

Why are there more company .fr than individual ones?

.fr was open to companies from 1986, but to individuals only from 2006. This historical gap explains the majority share of companies, even though the individuals' share is steadily growing.

Do you need to be French to own a .fr?

No. As an individual you must reside in the EEA (EU + Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) or Switzerland. A company may be based anywhere in the world if it provides a valid contact and complies with AFNIC's naming charter.

Is my personal data public in the WHOIS?

Since GDPR, personal data of individual holders is hidden in the public AFNIC WHOIS. Companies remain identified by their legal name and SIREN number.
