How has the .de domain stock evolved?

The .de stock has experienced spectacular growth since its inception in 1994, from a few thousand domains to over 17 million today. It is one of the most mature and active markets in Europe.

DENIC publishes the total monthly active stock but does not separately break down creations, deletions, and renewals by month. The table below shows the net monthly variations (stock delta) calculated from two consecutive months.

Growth has flattened in recent years as the German market approaches saturation. Net monthly growth typically ranges between +20,000 and +80,000 domains, with rarer but larger deletions at year-end (purge of unrenewed domains).

Preguntas frecuentes

Since when has .de been available?

The first .de was registered in November 1986. Public DENIC statistics go back to January 1994 when the thousand-domain mark was crossed.

Why does the stock delta vary so much month to month?

The net delta (creations minus deletions) includes all monthly movements. Mass deletions by certain registrars at year-end create occasional drops.

Is the .de stock still growing?

Yes, but growth has slowed since 2015. The German market is one of Europe's most mature, close to saturation.

How many .de are DNSSEC-signed?

DENIC publishes this figure in its dedicated CSV. DNSSEC adoption is progressing steadily but remains a minority (a few % of the stock).
